# Why Slack?
Slack is designed for fast and easy "work" communication. Functionally it is similar to any other internet chat app (Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal etc) but has some key distinctions because it is specifically designed for professional "work" use.
1. **Linked to your email, not your phone / phone number**:You can access slack on web (browser or computer app) or mobile app independent of each other. If you lose access to your phone you don't lose access to Slack.
2. **Work-only**: You don't get annoying forwards. You can mute all your other non-work chat apps when at work and still get important notifications.
3. Integrates well with other work tools such as Google calendar, Google Drive, Git, etc.
4. Easy to keep conversations segregated using threads, and public and private channels.
# Getting Started:
1. **Create an account**:Create an account on slack using your *iitdh.ac.in email - this will automatically add you to a workspace called "IITDH-all". Anyone with an IITDH email is allowed to join this workspace.
2. **Install the Apps**: (optional) install the Slack app on mobile, and/or Slack app for desktop.
2. **Channels**: Slack is organised into channels. On the left you will see a number of channels - some are public and some are private. Two public channels are `#iit-dharwad-all` and `#random`, and you will be added to topic-specific or project-specific private channels as needed.
